Fatemeh Forutan (mother Zaki-pour), the mother of Mahmoud Zaki-Pour, passed away on 28 October 2021 (6 Aban 1400 Iranian Calendar) at her home in Tehran. Mother Fatemeh Forutan was born in June 1928 (Khordad 1307) in Kazerun and was 93 years old at the time of her death.

From the time her son Mahmoud was executed by the Islamic Republic in September 1987 (Shahrivar 1366) at Evin Prison and buried in Khavaran, mother Zaki-pour began visiting Khavaran and, from then on, pursued justice for her son.

Mother Zaki-pour actively participated in all the justice-seeking gatherings organized by the mothers and families in Khavaran and in their homes. Together with the other Khavaran mothers, she consistently sought justice for their children. She was among the mothers who, throughout these years, worked to preserve Khavaran so that the Islamic Republic would not be able to erase this great evidence of its crime. Like many of the courageous Khavaran mothers, she stood firm like a cypress in the face of repression and threats by the regime and continually insisted on holding perpetrators of the Islamic Regime of Iran and those responsible for the killing of their children, from top to bottom, accountable.

Mahmoud Zaki-Pour

Mahmoud Zaki-Pour was born in 1946 (1325 Iranian Calendar) in Abadan. He was married and had one daughter. His political activities dated back to the period of the Shah’s monarchy, when he was a student at the University of Tehran. In 1972 (1351), he was arrested and imprisoned by SAVAK, the secret police of the Shah’s regime, and remained in prison until the 1979 Revolution. Before the Revolution, he was affiliated with the Organization of Iranian People’s Fedai Guerrillas and, following the split within the organization in 1980 (1359), he chose the Majority faction.

Mahmoud Zaki-Pour was arrested for a second time by the Islamic Republic’s Revolutionary Guards in 1983 (1362) and, on 13 September 1987 (22 Shahrivar 1366), was executed by firing squad at Evin Prison. His body was not returned to his family and, like many other leftist political prisoners, he was buried in an unmarked mass grave in Khavaran.
